Image-21The Government’s Year of Engineering is assembling Marvel Super Heroes, including Iron Man and The Hulk, to launch an exciting new partnership with the iconic comic brand. Marvel is the latest big name to join the campaign, which aims to transform perceptions of engineering among children age 7-16 and encourage more young people from different backgrounds to consider careers in the profession.

Young people are being encouraged to take the More Heroes Needed Aptitude Test to help them find out which Super Hero qualities they share with these legendary characters; they can then discover how those strengths could help them thrive in the world of engineering.

Launching the partnership, Year of Engineering Minister Nusrat Ghani joined children from the Berger Primary School in Hackney and a team of real-life Super Heroes – including a female army engineer turned weight-lifter, and an expert in comic book science – at Marvel’s Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. in the ExCeL London.

Theory: Mimikyu’s True Identity

Everyone loves a good fan theory, a creative ‘What If’ exercise to expand and develop a piece of pop culture that we all know and love.

With the release of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu & Let’s Go Eevee, I’ve been thinking a lot about the world of Pocket Monsters and I’ve developed a theory of my own. An answer to a fascinating Pokémon mystery that started with this simple Pokédex entry in Pokémon Ultra Moon:

“Sad that its true identity may be exposed, Mimikyu will mercilessly seek revenge on any opponent that breaks its neck.”

Whilst perhaps a little overly violent, this entry does raise a very interesting question: what is Mimikyu’s true identity?

I’ve developed my own little theory and after outlining the supporting evidence, I will recount my theory in full. But first I need to establish that the Pokémon videogames exist within the Pokémon videogames. Confused? Let me explain… Continue reading

Review: Green Book (2018)

greenbook.jpgGreen Book is a 2018 comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly and starring Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic, The Lord of the Rings) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Marvel’s Luke Cage). The story is based on true events and takes its name from a mid-20th century guidebook for African-American travelers.

A working-class Italian-American bouncer (Mortensen) becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist (Ali) on a tour of venues through the 1960’s American South.

Even whilst dealing with the inevitably heavy racism, the film conforms to the structure of a buddy-comedy road-trip movie, where two characters from two very different walks of life are forced together and become friends over hardships.

Review: Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

Wreck it Ralph 2-2.jpgRalph Breaks the Internet (Wreck-It Ralph 2) is the sequel to Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph directed by Phil Johnston and Rich Moore and starring John C. Reily, Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot, Taraji P. Henson, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Alan Tudyk.

Six years after the events of “Wreck-It Ralph,” Ralph (Reily) and Vanellope (Silverman) head to the internet to track down a replacement steering wheel for her arcade game before her game is switched off forever.

Let’s get a few things of the obvious things out of the way first. The animation is outstanding – the colours pop beautifully, the textures are varied and detailed, the scale is outstanding and the character designs are great. The star-studded cast are perfect for their roles and put in fantastic performances (especially Alan Tudyk as KnowsMore). Continue reading
