How one magazine transformed British photography |
Ship Of Life Films are delighted to announce the release of their new documentary, Picture Stories, about the life and legacy of Picture Post, the revolutionary magazine which shaped perceptions of British life during and after the Second World War. Ahead of its UK theatrical release on the 24th September, the documentary will also have special screenings at the Royal Photographic Society in Bristol on 15th September, and the Photography Show (NEC Birmingham) on 18th September. Following the UK theatrical release, Picture Stories will be released on digital download on 30th September. Britain’s best-selling magazine during the Second World War, and hugely influential for years after, Picture Post revolutionised the picture magazine, showing Britain to the British in a fundamentally new way. Using the freedom of new camera technology, Picture Post’s photographers portrayed the lives of ordinary people, at home, on the street, unposed – in a way they had never been seen before. Through its powerful, socially committed picture stories, Picture Post helped to transform post-war Britain, and change the face of British photography. The story of this iconic magazine is told by its photographers, writers and editors. Leading contemporary photographers reflect on Picture Post’s extraordinary images and influence. |
Commenting on the release, film director Rob West stated; “Picture Post is arguably the most important magazine in British social history. It was born under the threat of War, and survived and flourished under the intense bombardment of the Blitz. Extraordinarily, during the height of World War II, Picture Post was looking ahead to post-War life and to the possibility of fundamental social reform. Picture Post had a huge impact on national awareness of social conditions in Britain and of the need for a comprehensive welfare state and a national health service. It brought cutting-edge photography, and the picture story, to a mass audience. It changed people’s understanding of their own country by showing, vividly, what British life was really like. I wanted to bring the extraordinary story of Picture Post and its photographers to modern audiences. Many of things we take for granted in photography, and our understanding of photographs and picture layout, started with Picture Post. Many of our ideas about British society were forged by Picture Post and its unique group of creators.” UK screenings of Picture Stories wil take place from 15th September and will be available on Digital Download from 30th September. UK Theatrical Release: The ParaPod – A Very British Ghost Hunt
0![]() |
Blue Finch Film Releasing & Infinite Hermit are excited to announce that hilarious new docu-comedy The ParaPod: A Very British Ghost Hunt will be coming to UK cinemas this September & on VOD 27th September. After 3.5 million podcast downloads, sold-out live shows and hit specials, get ready to go on the road with hardwired sceptic Ian Boldsworth. Follow as he goes head-to-head with lifelong believer Barry Dodds to discover the truth about the supernatural. Taking to the roads of the UK in a souped-up hearse, they visit the UK’s most haunted village, the home of the world’s most violent poltergeist, the underground labyrinths of Edinburgh, and everywhere in between. What follows is a rollercoaster of conflict and hilarity, as Barry tries – with increasing desperation – to find the proof to convince his cynical friend that ghosts are real. Documentary-filmed completely on location over a three-year period, The ParaPod – A Very British Ghost Hunt is produced by Bil Bungay (Moon, Diego Maradona, Nureyev, When The Lights Went Out), directed by and starring award-winning podcast pioneer Ian Boldsworth (The ParaPod, Peacock & Gamble Podcast, The Mental Podcast) with multi-award-winning comedian Barry Dodds. |
Director & star Ian Boldsworth is excited for the release saying “The sell-out preview of January 2020 in London’s Leicester Square rather cruelly tricked me into believing this arduous journey of listening to Barry’s ghost nonsense had an end in sight. In March 2020, two dates into the UK screening tour, it was clear that the universe had other ideas. So I am truly delighted that this unique film is finally going to be witnessed by others, and I can get the sympathy I deserve for putting myself through this supernatural bombardment.” Co-star Barry Dodds also can’t wait for the release saying “After what has felt like (and literally has been) years of waiting for the wider world to see the film which dominated so much of our working lives, it’s a real pleasure to know that it will finally be out there for the world to see. It’s a very unique experience to hear oneself in the grip of mind-bending fear but I hope both sceptics and believers will take away something from this film, hopefully, something different to what they brought to it” The ParaPod – A Very British Ghost Hunt is coming to cinemas this September and on VOD 27th September theparapod.com |

A Christmas Carol follows a Victorian family as they prepare a toy-theatre for their annual performance of A Christmas Carol. The audience enters the imagination of one of the children and quickly the cardboard stage transforms to reveal a magical world containing real dancers and stylised sets. The tale unfolds on screen in a rich tapestry of highly absorbing, haunting and theatrical drama with characters portrayed by dancers and voiced by an eclectic cast of incredible actors. The mix of danced action and spoken narration brings a completely new and exciting dimension to Dickens’ characters whilst remaining true to the beauty of his original narrative. With pantomime season all but cancelled, the dual approach to release is to support both cinema and theatre industries during a time of financial hardship generated by the Coronavirus pandemic. The announcement of a second lockdown has not changed directors David and Jacqui Morris’s approach towards such an inherently theatrical film, best enjoyed on the big screen. Both directors see the release and supporting local cinemas and theatres as an inherent part of A Christmas Carol’s 2020 release. A Christmas Carol will be showing in mainland UK cinemas and theatres nationwide from 4th December and Ireland from 11th December.
